Welcome back from Spring Break! The students were excited to see their friends again and get back into the routine of learning.

Free Vision Screening for Students
Nation's Vision will be at Alex Munro School next week, April 8-12, to offer free vision exams for students. If you would like your child's vision screened, simply fill out the form sent home this week and return it by tomorrow, April 5.

April AMPA Meeting – Monday, April 8
The April School Council and Parent Association meeting will be on Monday, April 8 at 6:15pm online. A link for the meeting will be sent out Monday morning.

Partial Eclipse Precautions | Monday, April 8
On Monday, April 8 a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2 PM, with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 PM. Students will be staying indoors between 11:50 and 2:00 pm.

We know this may provide a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision from viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner.

During this partial solar eclipse on Monday, we would like to invite all students to remain at school during the lunch break. If your child normally goes home for lunch, and you would like them to stay at school over lunch hour please send a lunch with your child we will be happy to accommodate. If you decide that your child will walk home for lunch on Monday, please discuss with your child not to look at the sun to protect his/her eyes from damage by the solar eclipse.

During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional.

For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists

Do You Want to Volunteer (more) at Alex Munro School?
If you are already cleared and approved to volunteer at our school, AMPA would like to connect with you to find out more information about your interest and availability regarding volunteering at the school.  If you would like to provide this information to AMPA, please email them at ampavolunteers@gmail.com.  AMPA will then be using this information when helping the school recruit volunteers for various school events.  If you are not yet cleared for volunteering and are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Linda in the office at 403-777-6600, and she will provide you with the steps required to get cleared and registered.  Thank you – we always appreciate our volunteers!

Ramadan and Physical Activity
We understand that students who are fasting in observance of Ramadan may have less energy during the day. To accommodate for students who are fasting, teachers will modify Physical Education activities. Students will still be expected to learn the daily lesson and/or skill and can do some practicing of these skills, however when the activity or practice of the skills requires a lot of energy teachers will allow students to take a break or sit out. Students should not be missing Phys. Ed classes as the skills taught are directly from the Alberta curriculum and is a requirement for students to learn. Again, all students are expected to attend Phys. Ed classes, and with the above modifications in place, it is not necessary for any student to miss Phys. Ed class.

Safety and Traffic Reminders
Thank-you for your care and attention to the safety of all of our students and staff in and around the school each day.

Please use the designated crosswalks when crossing with students – crossing between cars or around busses reduces visibility and increases risk for injury. We have had few calls about jaywalking in front of the school.

A reminder that there is no parent drop off or pick up of students in the staff parking lot. Families must use street parking around the school.  Please note the no stopping zone in front of the school.  Please do not stop here.  This area is for safe pedestrian traffic and bus parking.  We will have a school bus and two daycare busses that need to safely load and unload students in this space.
