What an amazing first week of school! Thank you to our students, teachers, support staff, and families for helping make our first week together such a positive, welcoming, and enjoyable one. There is always a special energy that comes with the beginning of a new school year, but this year has felt particularly exciting as our Alex Munro community has grown and welcomed so many new faces.

It has been wonderful welcoming the families and students from the Carrington community to Alex Munro School. While this year brings many changes and new experiences, one thing has been very clear throughout the week: we are becoming one school community. We have seen students making new friends, teachers getting to know new students, and families beginning to connect with one another. The smiles, conversations, laughter, and excitement throughout the school have been wonderful to see.

With our school growing this year, there has certainly been a lot to learn and adjust to. New students, new staff, new classrooms, new routines, and a new community joining our school have made this a significant transition for everyone. Yet, through all of the change, our staff have remained focused on what matters most: creating a school where every child feels known, valued, included, and excited to learn.

One of the things that has stood out most this week has been the positive energy throughout our school. We are already seeing new friendships being formed, connections being made, and a growing sense of belonging. This is exactly what we hoped for as we began this new chapter together.

Of course, the first week is just the beginning. Over the coming weeks and months, we will continue to learn about one another, build relationships, establish traditions, and create opportunities for all of our students and families to contribute to the life of our school.

Thank you for an incredible first week and for the many ways you have helped make it so successful. We are incredibly excited about what lies ahead and feel very fortunate to be beginning this journey together.

School Staff for 2026/27
A list of our school staff for this year can be found on our website by clicking here.

New School Morning Entry Routine 9:00-9:14am
This year we are welcoming students into the school 14mins prior to the bell starting at 9:00am so they can come into their classroom and settle into learning. This is called “soft entry” and supports the morning transition into learning so that the day can begin promptly at the 9:14am morning bell.

Alex Munro Parent Association (AMPA) and School Council Meeting – Sept 14
Our first parent council meeting of the 2026-27 school year will be on Monday, September 14 at 6:30pm Joining this meeting is a great way for parents to participate alongside school administration to make important decisions that support the students at Alex Munro school as well as get involved with school fundraisers. More details will be coming in next week's weekly communication about the meeting format.

Volunteer Registration
Throughout the year there will be many opportunities for volunteering.  September is a good time to get all the paperwork completed, especially for new volunteers. This includes getting a police clearance, which is valid for 5 years.  For anyone who already has a police clearance, please fill out our annual volunteer registration form and send it to our front office (drop off, with student, or via email). The form can be downloaded by clicking here. Anyone who requires a police clearance can call the office at 403-777-6600 and we will be happy to help you with this process.

Bus Attendance
If your child rides the bus and will not be riding after school on a particular day for any reason please call the office at 403-777-6600 to let us know so that we can ensure we have an accurate bus attendance list for each day.  Letting us know helps ensure that the buses leave on time.

Bus Registration
If you are requiring bus transportation and haven’t registered yet, it is important that you register your child for the bus.  This can be done through your MyCBE account. Please visit the CBE bus registration page for more information on how to register your child.

SoundKreations – Sept 14-24
We are excited to be welcoming back our favourite dance crew residency, SoundKreations, for a fifth year in a row! From Sept 14-24 students will be learning the art of dance and movement. More information about this exciting residency will be included in next week's communication. This dance residency has no additional charge to parents – thank you AMPA (Alex Munro Parent Association) who fundraised to make this experience possible for our students.

Meet the Teacher (Learn the Student) Night – Sept 24
Building a strong school-home partnership requires both “meeting the teacher” and “learning the student”. September conferences are the best opportunity for your child's teacher to get to know who they are as learners from the people who know them best – their parents.  We will be hosting our Meet the Teacher/Learn the Student night on the evening of Thurs, Sept 24 from 4:30pm-7:00pm. The evening will include a student-led guided tour of the classroom and other main areas of the school. Parents will have an opportunity for a sit-down conference in November when further assessment information has been gathered. We will provide more details about specific timeframes as we get closer to the date.

School Photos
Photo day is Tuesday, Sept 15.  Students will have a ¾ length pose and a head and shoulder pose.  Retakes will be in October.  Information about school photos is available through Lifetouch at 1.866.457.8212 or on the ordering website www.mylifetouch.ca

Breakfast and Food Nutrition Program
Alex Munro school has a fantastic food nutrition program starting with a morning breakfast cart available to students and they enter for the day with vegetarian, gelatin-free, and nut free food available to all students.  These items include fruit, vegetables, a protein (cheese, eggs, yogurt) and freshly baked goods. After the morning bell, these food items are available throughout the day at the mini fridge in front of the main office.

Bottle Drive Fridays
Just like last year you can donate your refundable bottles to AMPA by dropping them off at the front of the school (by the free little library) every Friday.  Our goal this year is to raise $2000 through our bottle drive Fridays. This supports events and resources that go directly to students.

Safety Reminders in and Around the School
Thank you for your care and attention to the safety of our students, staff and community members in and around the school each day.

Please be attentive to the speed limits as well as the various crosswalks around the school, especially during the busy drop off and pick up times.

A reminder that there is no drop off or pick up of students in the staff parking lot.  Families are welcome to use street parking around the school for drop off and pick up purposes.  Please do not park in the staff parking lot during drop off or pick up times unless you require the blue tag accessibility spots close to the school.

Please note that directly in front of the school is a "no stopping zone". This area is designated as “no stopping” to support pedestrian safety and school bus loading and unloading. When crossing the street, please use the crosswalks.

We are pleased to be working with the AMA and Calgary Police Service team to resume AMA School Safety Patrols once again at Alex Munro School.  We will begin once training of staff and students is complete (likely not before the end of September).  This will support the safe crossing on 78 Ave. NE.

Thank you for doing your part to contribute to the great citizenship of this wonderful neighbourhood.
