November 23 - Weekly Update
It is important for all families to have a sit-down conversation with your child’s teacher regarding their progress so far this year. Please book an appointment. Information about our Parent Teacher Conferences can be found below.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences will be tomorrow Friday, November 25 from 8am – 4pm. These conferences will be a 15 min scheduled sit down meeting with your child’s teacher. Please bring your child with you as they will be involved as advocates of their own learning. If you haven’t booked an appointment yet, please do this today by logging into your MyCBE account. Teachers are looking forward to connecting with families with focused conversations about how their children are doing both academically and holistically as a student.
Scholastic Book Fair
Alex Munro school library has been hosting a book fair this week. The book fair will be open all day Friday during conferences for families to browse and purchase books.
Lockdown Drill – Dec 1
All CBE schools are required to practice two lockdown drills every school year. Calgary Police will be assisting us with our first lockdown drill next Friday, Dec 1 at 10am. The procedures all schools are expected to follow include gathering at an identified area within the classroom with staff and students remaining quiet and calm until the lockdown is over. No one can enter or leave the building during a lockdown drill. We are letting parents and guardians know in advance so that they can have a discussion with their child before the lockdown drill if they choose. Teachers will be discussing and going over procedures with their classes next week. If the anticipation of participating in the lockdown drill next week is causing your child stress, then please let your child’s teacher know so that they can support your child before, during, and after the practice drill.
French as a Second Language
Mme Sophia Aristou is the FSL, French as a Second Language, teacher for our grades 4,5 and 6s classes at Alex Munro. Students have been learning to speak in full sentences through songs, games and various interactive activities. The themes that have been taught so far include: colours, numbers, salutations, and body parts.
Mme Aristou is available for a virtual parent-teacher conference this Friday, November 25th from 9am-2pm. If you would like to discuss your child's learning in French or to learn more about the Late French Immersion program at Georges P. Vanier School, please contact Mme Sophia Aristou at sjaristou@cbe.ab.ca.
A Free French Library For Grade 4-6 students
As part of our partnership with George P. Vanier school providing French learning for our grade 4 to 6 students, Mme Aristou has arranged to have a free French mobile library she is calling the 'Bibliobus,' for our grade 4 to 6 students who are learning French from her this year, to be able to take French language books home to read so they can practice their French reading. The opportunity sign out these books will start next week.
Giving Faire
Please see this attached letter regarding the Giving Faire event and the passport of activities we will host. We are pleased to invite all families to the school for this special evening of celebration and community building from 5:30 – 7 PM. Thanks in advance for your donations toward this event and thanks also to AMPA for their generous support of this activity.
Veterans Food Drive
November is an important month where we remember the sacrifices of all the Canadians that served the country to support peace, freedom and democracy. The Veteran food bank helps support many of these service members. Alex Munro school will continue to collect non-perishable food for the Veterans food for the next few weeks. Students are welcome to bring in food donations until tomorrow November 24.
AMPA Bottle Drive and Fundraising News
AMPA continues to collect bottles every Friday – just drop your bottles off at the front of the school every Friday and they will take care of the rest! Thanks to everyone who has already participated in this fundraiser. AMPA also kicked off their latest fundraiser on Nov 7. Information about this fundraiser was sent home with your child last week.
Traffic Safety
Although it is convenient to pull into our parking lot to drop off or pick up your child at or from school, parking lots are dangerous places when vehicles and children are in them at the same time. Parents, as contributing members of our community and to support our school, please do not enter our parking lot for pick up or drop off purposes. We have plenty of street parking around the school. Thank you for supporting the safety of our students.
Our patrols are doing a great job helping everyone cross at our crosswalk on 78th Ave, however many people are still jaywalking at various points in front of the school. For the safety of all people use the crosswalk. Thank you.
