Oct. 9 Weekly Update | Walking Field Trips, Outdoor School, Patrols, Fall Cleanup,
It was another busy week! Grade 4’s went to a field trip last week to learn more about waste management and the world class composting program at the City of Calgary. They also had a guest speaker from Green Calgary to talk to them about recycling. All the teachers at Alex Munro have planned some exciting field trips this year for all students at every grade level. Thanks to AMPA for providing some extra funds for busing which helps with lowering field trip fees for families.
Walking Field Study Trips
Field study trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school. The process for trips within walking distance of the school is a simplified process from other field trips (this excludes swimming). As parents/legal guardians, you are not required to complete a consent form for your child to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school. Appropriate walking distance is determined by the principal and varies depending on the age of the students. Teachers will provide at least 48 hours notice when planning a trip to a local or to walk within the community. You will be notified about these trips by your child’s homeroom teacher via email, teacher blog or letter. For more information please read the letter under Resources.
Tim Horton’s Ranch Outdoor School – Grade 6
Our Grade 6 students and teachers will be going for a multi-day overnight field trip from Oct 16-19. This is a great experience that will bring the students closer together through team building, collaborative games and activities, as well as developing character and responsibility. They will also be living, learning and playing in the majestic Rocky Mountains for 4 days! This is such a great opportunity for your child so try not to miss out! If you or your child are feeling nervous, we need to chat, because I really believe that this type of experience is such a great opportunity for your child to build their character in a positive way around peers that they will be spending most of their days with for their Grade 6 year.
Safety Patrols
Our student safety patrollers started this week. Thanks to all the Grade 5 and 6 students who are supporting our students with safely crossing at the 78th Ave crosswalk.
Fall Clean-Up (Save the Date!)
Come out with your family and help make our beautiful naturalization space winter ready. We will be raking, picking up garbage and fertilizing. We will learn to make our own bone meal so if you have plans to celebrate Thanksgiving with a turkey or pumpkin pie, bring along your small bones, eggshells and coffee grounds! There will be garden-related activities for the kids and a special treat to warm up! Join us Saturday October 14 between 1:00-3:30 and stay for as little or as long as you can.
