Our students had a fantastic time at the Terry Fox Run last Friday! It was wonderful to see everyone getting outside, enjoying the beautiful day, and coming together to support such an important cause. Thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success!
Our first Parent Council meeting of the school year was also very well attended, both in person at the school and online through Teams. A huge thank you to all of the parents who took the time to join us on Monday evening. Having a supportive and engaged parent council truly makes a difference for our students and our school community. The incredible fundraising and support provided by the Alex Munro Parent Association (AMPA) gives our students opportunities and experiences that we would not otherwise be able to provide.
A great example is our current Sound Kreations dance residency, which is fully funded by AMPA! We are so grateful for the support that allows every student in our school to participate in this exciting experience. It is another wonderful example of what we can accomplish when our school and families work together!
Sound Kreations – Sept 14-24
We are excited to be welcoming back our favourite dance crew residency, Sound Kreations, for a fifth year in a row! From Sept 14-24 students will be learning the art of dance and movement. The students will be showcasing their dances on Sept 24 with two performances. The first showcase will be at 11:30am where the Tue/Thurs Kindergarten class and the Grade 4-6 students will be performing and the second assembly will be at 3:00pm with the grade 1-3 students will be performing. We will also be having a short presentation by the Mon/Wed Kindergarten class on Wednesday, Sept 23 at 3:15pm. Friends and family are welcome to come and watch. This dance residency has no additional charge to parents – thank you AMPA (Alex Munro Parent Association) who fundraised to make this experience possible for our students.
Meet the Teacher (Learn the Student) Night – Sept 24
Building a strong school-home partnership requires both “meeting the teacher” and “learning the student”. September conferences are the best opportunity for your child's teacher to get to know who they are as learners from the people who know them best – their parents. We will be hosting our Meet the Teacher/Learn the Student night on the evening of Thurs, Sept 24 from 4:30pm-7:00pm. The evening will include a student-led guided tour of the classroom and other main areas of the school. Parents will have an opportunity for a sit-down conference in November when further assessment information has been gathered. We will provide more details about specific timeframes as we get closer to the date.
School Phone Issues – main line 403-777-6600
We are currently experiencing problems with our main school phone line. If you are having difficulty contacting us, please call our secondary lines at 403-777-6601 or 403-777-6602 or alternatively you can send us an email at alexmunro@cbe.ab.ca. We have reported this problem to Telus and it should be resolved by next week.
Garden News
Thank you so much to everyone who came by to help the garden this summer. The water barrels are still out so that you can keep watering your favourite plants!
October 1 - 9 > For those who adopted a plant over summer, there will be a small thank you bag at Ms. Best's desk
October 17 1-3pm > Fall Fertilizer Frenzy: make your own bonemeal! Bring your leftover turkey bones, coffee grounds and eggshells and see our demonstration for how to make your own home fertilizer. Learn about the plants in the garden, pull up some persistent weeds to show its full glory and get the beds ready for winter. We may wash up with homemade soap from our new garden soapwort plant! All families are welcome for this Saturday afternoon of fun. Hope to see you there!
Volunteer Registration
Throughout the year there will be many opportunities for volunteering. September is a good time to get all the paperwork completed, especially for new volunteers. This includes filling out the Annual Volunteer form in School Engage, and getting a police clearance, which is valid for 5 years. The form can also be downloaded by clicking here. Anyone who requires a police clearance can call the office at 403-777-6600 and we will be happy to help you with this process.
Bus Attendance
If your child rides the bus and will not be riding after school on a particular day for any reason please call the office at 403-777-6600 to let us know so that we can ensure we have an accurate bus attendance list for each day. Letting us know helps ensure that the buses leave on time.
Bus Registration
If you are requiring bus transportation and haven’t registered yet, it is important that you register your child for the bus. This can be done through your MyCBE account. Please visit the CBE bus registration page for more information on how to register your child.
Breakfast and Food Nutrition Program
Alex Munro school has a fantastic food nutrition program starting with a morning breakfast cart available to students and they enter for the day with vegetarian, gelatin-free, and nut free food available to all students. These items include fruit, vegetables, a protein (cheese, eggs, yogurt) and freshly baked goods. After the morning bell, these food items are available throughout the day at various times, at the mini fridge in front of the main office.
Bottle Drive Fridays
Just like last year you can donate your refundable bottles to AMPA by dropping them off at the front of the school (by the free little library) every Friday. Our goal this year is to raise $2000 through our bottle drive Fridays. This supports events and resources that go directly to students.
Safety Reminders in and Around the School
Thank you for your care and attention to the safety of our students, staff and community members in and around the school each day.
Please be attentive to the speed limits as well as the various crosswalks around the school, especially during the busy drop off and pick up times.
A reminder that there is no drop off or pick up of students in the staff parking lot. Families are welcome to use street parking around the school for drop off and pick up purposes. Please do not park in the staff parking lot during drop off or pick up times unless you require the blue tag accessibility spots close to the school.
Please note that directly in front of the school is a "no stopping zone". This area is designated as “no stopping” to support pedestrian safety and school bus loading and unloading. When crossing the street, please use the crosswalks.
We are pleased to be working with the AMA and Calgary Police Service team to resume AMA School Safety Patrols once again at Alex Munro School. We will begin once training of staff and students is complete (likely not before the end of September). This will support the safe crossing on 78 Ave. NE.
Thank you for doing your part to contribute to the great citizenship of this wonderful neighbourhood.
