Sept 21 - Weekly Update
Thank you to all families who attended the Sound Kreations dance show last Friday. What a turn-out! It was great to have you all out supporting your child(ren). The students really appreciated the support and having a great audience to dance for! What a great way to celebrate all the learning from the awesome and talented instructors at Sound Kreations. Again, thanks to AMPA for funding this fantastic experience. The Terry Fox run yesterday was also great fun. It was great to see the students encourage each other while completing the route. Thanks to all families that donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. As you all know Terry Fox is a Canadian hero who through his legacy has raised an enormous about of money for cancer research. It was great to see all the students learning about Terry Fox and his impact on our society throughout the week.
Meet the Teacher (Learn the Student) Night
Teachers are excited to be meeting families and learning more about their students tonight. We invite families with the last names A-I to attend anytime between 4:30-5:50. Last names between J-Z attend from 6:10-7:30.
If your child is in grade 6 there will be a mandatory meeting between 5:30pm-6:30pm in the school gym about the upcoming multi-day overnight outdoor school field trip during our open house tonight. For grade 6 families, please plan your open house experience around this meeting.
During the Meet the Teacher event AMPA will have a table set up to share information about how you can become more involved with parent association sponsored events that support our students. AMPA is asking that if you plan on donating bottles this week, you can bring them Thursday evening instead of Friday as there is no school this Friday.
Tim Horton’s Ranch Outdoor School – Grade 6
Our grade 6 students and teachers will be going for a multi-day overnight field trip from Oct 16-19. This is a great experience that will bring the students closer together through team building, collaborative games and activities, as well as developing character and responsibility. They will also be living, learning and playing in the majestic Rocky Mountains for 4 days! This is such a great opportunity for your child so try not to miss out! If you or your child are feeling nervous, we need to chat, because I really believe that this type of experience is such a great opportunity for your child to build their character in a positive way around peers that they will be spending most of their days with for their grade 6 year.
Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Every Child Matters! Every single child! That is why it is so important that we recognize, understand, and take-action toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Although the history and relationship of Canada and the various sovereign Indigenous cultures has been tainted, we share a common land, and we all live together in Treaty 7 territory. Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation are two important concrete events where we can “walk-together” with understanding to build a better future for Canada. It is also important that we continue to work together towards reconciliation beyond these two days. Alex Munro School is committed to Truth and Reconciliation, and we have committed to our Call to Action for this year which can be found here.
Invite | National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event - Sept. 30
CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an intertribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.
Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millennium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.
Terry Fox Fundraising Run
Our annual Terry Fox Run was a great success. We are busy collecting the number of laps each class ran. Families are invited to participate in the “Toonies for Terry” fundraising campaign for cancer research. Families can donate by sending money to school with students, which will be collected by classroom teachers or by clicking on the following link which will allow for donations to be made online: https://schools.terryfox.ca/31234 Donations will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 29.
Safety Patrols
Our student safety patrollers are in early training and will be out helping our students cross at the crosswalk on 78 Avenue starting October 2. Students will be receiving information and schedules soon.
