Sept 28 - Weekly Update

It’s hard to believe that September is coming to an end. It feels like we have been back to school for more than only one month! Thank you to all the families who came out to our Meet the Teacher night last week. It was great to see how proud all the students were as they were showing their classroom and our school to their families. It was a great pleasure to showcase for families all the hard work that we have done so far this school year!

Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Every Child Matters! Every single child! That is why it is so important that we recognize, understand, and take-action toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Although the history and relationship of Canada and the various sovereign Indigenous cultures has been tainted, we share a common land, and we all live together in Treaty 7 territory. Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation are two important concrete events where we can “walk-together” with understanding to build a better future for Canada.  It is also important that we continue to work together towards reconciliation beyond these two days.  Alex Munro School is committed to Truth and Reconciliation, and we have committed to our Call to Action for this year which can be found here.

Invite | National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event - Sept. 30
CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an inter-tribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.

Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millennium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.

Tim Horton’s Ranch Outdoor School – Grade 6
Our grade 6 students and teachers will be going for a multi-day overnight field trip from Oct 16-19. This is a great experience that will bring the students closer together through team building, collaborative games and activities, as well as developing character and responsibility.  They will also be living, learning and playing in the majestic Rocky Mountains for 4 days! This is such a great opportunity for your child so try not to miss out! If you or your child are feeling nervous, we need to chat, because I really believe that this type of experience is such a great opportunity for your child to build their character in a positive way around peers that they will be spending most of their days with for their grade 6 year.

International Walk to School Week | Oct. 2-6
International Walk to School Month gives children, families and caregivers, school communities and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking.   Walkers from around the world walk to school together for various reasons — all hoping to create communities that are safe places to walk.  Link: International Walk to School Week

Safety Patrols
Our student safety patrollers are in early training and will be out helping our students cross at the crosswalk on 78 Avenue starting October 2. Students will be receiving information and schedules soon.

Fall Clean-Up (Save the Date!)
Come out with your family and enjoy the fall air in our beautiful naturalization space. You can get to know some of the plants in our garden and walk the labyrinth. We will have various jobs for preparing the beds for winter, including raking, garbage pick-up, and fertilizing. There will be a special treat afterward to help you warm up!
